Getting Screened for Cancer and Why Early Detection Saves Lives

Cancer in our community

Whether it’s you, one of your loved ones, or someone in your community, cancer has impacted all our lives in some way, especially in our own Montgomery County community. Cancer was the second leading cause of death in Montgomery County this past year. In the 2025 Regional Community Health Needs Assessment for Southeastern Pennsylvania, one-third of adults in Montgomery County said cancer was a top health concern in their community.

While advancements in cancer treatment continue to offer new hope, getting screened today is one of the most proactive steps you can take for your own health. Screening tests are used to find cancer before a person has any symptoms. Screening can help detect and diagnose pre-cancers and cancers early, and when we detect it, we can treat it.

Why get screened? Early detection saves lives!

Early detection of cancer can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes and quality of life. Here are 5 reasons why getting screened early is recommended to support your health.

Catch it early

Many cancers may cause no signs or symptoms until later stages of disease. When we screen early and regularly, we can often catch cancers in early stages, and before it has grown or spread to other parts of the body.

More treatment options

When cancer is detected in early stages, patients may be eligible for less invasive treatments or have more treatment options available to you. Minimally invasive treatments often result in faster recovery times and fewer side effects compared to more advanced treatments.

Higher survival rates

Early cancer diagnosis significantly improves chances of successful treatment. Early stage, localized cancers have a much higher survival rate than later stage, metastatic cancers.

Better quality of life

Advanced-stage cancer diagnosis can take a physical, emotional, and financial toll on patients and families. Early detection and diagnosis can help preserve your quality of life, reduce stress, and limit long-term healthcare expenses.

Empower yourself through action

Taking the important step to get screened empowers you to take control of your health. Getting screened can help you to make informed decisions about your healthcare, and advocate for your best health and wellbeing.

The United States Preventative Services Task Force provides recommendations of how frequently people at average risk should get screened and what age to begin screening. Different screening methods may be recommended based on individual risk factors, family history, and age. Talk to your doctor to discuss what screenings are right for you.
